Numerous rocky cliffs and cone-shaped mountains were formed in the Wolfhagen region - the remains of what were once much larger volcanoes. Rocks from the Bunter sandstone are also widespread. Their trace fossils provide a picture of the landscape and living conditions at the beginning of the Mesozoic era around 250 million years ago. The tracks of the Wolfhagen prehistoric animal, which is one of the archosaurs, are considered to be the oldest in the world!
