The 12km long Aduarderdiep is the continuation of the Peizerdiep (Koningsdiep) and begins on the Hoendiep at Vierverlaten.
The canal played an important role in draining the area. For this purpose, the lock complex in Aduarderzijl has been expanded several times. Around 1840 the Friesestraatweg was built across the canal. The name of the neighboring hamlet Nieuwklap still refers to it. In the 19th century there were several brick factories on the canal. In 1876 the provincial dike was completed, so that the ebb and flow of the Reitdiep disappeared and the Aduarderzijlen lost their function. In the 1930s the canal was crossed by the new Van Starkenborgh Canal.
