It has been the most important long-distance train station in East Berlin since the 1980s. Most of the long-distance trains that passed through Berlin on internal GDR routes ran here. Its former importance can be seen in the extensive track systems.
Since the 2000s, Lichtenberg station, with around 85,000 passengers per day[2], has been used almost exclusively for regional transport for connections to the eastern and northern surroundings of Berlin.
