In 1939, twelve Aussiedlerhöfe (resettler farms) were established in the area between Villingen and Schwenningen to enable farmers to manage their land significantly more effectively. The legal basis was the Reichserbhofgesetz (Reich Hereditary Farm Law) of 1933, which was intended to protect farms from excessive debt and fragmentation as a result of inheritance. The land was largely provided by the hospital fund and the city of Villingen. The name "Bertholdshöfe" (Berthold Farms) commemorates Count Berthold, the founder of Villingen.
