Until it collapsed in October 1990, the Hölzlekönigin (Queen of Trees), a mighty silver fir, stood on this site, 42 meters tall and 4.8 meters across. The approximately 300-year-old tree had a wood volume of approximately 40 cubic meters. Even after 35 years, its remains can still be seen. Its old wood now provides a habitat for many microorganisms, insects, and birds.

For many years, the Hölzlekönig (King of the Woods) in the Schwenningen Forest was considered Germany's tallest silver fir. Even after a severe storm tore off both of its main branches in 1876, it was still described as 42 meters tall and with a timber volume of 64 cubic meters. Another storm snapped it off at a height of 20 meters in 1915. The final demise of the tree, presumably around 400 years old, came in 1940. The Hölzlekönig lives on in local legends and as a symbol of the Schwenningen carnival.
