In the rivers of the Venn you can find slate and quartzite basins from the younger Cambrian period (545 to 505 million years ago). They are among the oldest layers in the core of the Venn saddle. Their original sediments were planktonic clay and sand deposits from a deep sea. After they had solidified, they were tectonically deformed as clay and sandstones, i.e. folded, foliated and placed upright. Today, the originally black Revin rocks bleach when exposed to air due to the oxidation of their carbon compounds. Source: Wandern im Venn, Walter / Von Hoegen
