In a central location on the Lower Market, a Hankerl sculpture sits on a granite base - the Hankerl fountain is reminiscent of the legend of the Hankerln: mystical creatures who played tricks on people, but also helped with work.
The drinking fountain was created by Engelbert Süß, as was the larger blacksmith's fountain, which is not far away.

The artist Engelbert Süß, a native Mitterteicher, has created this drinking fountain, which points to the Hankerlsage. The Hankerl squatting on a granite column points with his left hand to the magic key. Those who find it, can open the cave on the Teichelberg and thus reach the treasures. After Hankerlsage lived long ago in Mitterteich the Hankerl. They helped the Mitterteichern in many things. But they were very ungrateful and killed one of them. With all their treasures, the Hankerl retired to a cave in the Teichelberg.
