With around 38,000 students, the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg) is the third largest university among the universities in Bavaria. It was settled in Erlangen in 1743 and has also been based in Nuremberg since 1961.

The university was named after the Franconian Margrave Friedrich von Brandenburg-Bayreuth, who founded the university, and Karl Alexander von Brandenburg-Ansbach, who had significantly promoted it.[6]

There are 308 chairs. With around 40,000 students, it is the third largest university in Bavaria[7] and about the tenth largest in Germany.[8] It is based in Erlangen. For historical reasons, the university's locations are spread over the neighboring cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg, with around two thirds of the students studying in Erlangen and one third in Nuremberg.

Of the 38,494 students in the 2019/2020 winter semester, 19,451 were female and 5,220 came from abroad.[7] FAU offers a very wide range of subjects, 261 courses in 2019, of which 77 are bachelor's courses, 92 are master's courses and 92 are courses with a state examination (e.g. teaching, law, medicine).

At the university there are seven DFG research groups, six graduate colleges and two facilities of the Excellence Initiative. Due to numerous cooperations with other universities and technical colleges in the region, the Friedrich-Alexander University has branch offices throughout northern Bavaria. The FAU Language Center enables students of all disciplines to obtain international language qualifications with a UNIcert degree. FAU is a member of MedienCampus Bayern, the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria.
