The Neustadt Marienkirche, a high Gothic hall church, has two towers dating from 1293. However, they were only completed with Gothic spires at the beginning of the 16th century. These spires were later destroyed in a storm and replaced by baroque domes. From an art-historical point of view, this church is the most valuable architectural monument in the city. It is 52 meters long and 78 meters high. In 1553 it was the starting point of the Reformation in Bielefeld. The church served for a time as the burial place of the Counts of Ravensberg. The Marienkirche was badly damaged in the Second World War. Among other things, the spires, which had been baroque until then, were destroyed in an air raid. In 1965 they were rebuilt in Gothic style and given their extremely pointed shape.
