Cathedral with beautiful painters from the 15th Century, worth a visit
September 17, 2017
The church, under the patronage of Saint Botolph, was built around 1450 and was elevated to an episcopal church in 1554 after the Reformation, which began later in Aalborg than in the rest of Denmark.
In place of today's church there was previously a wooden church and two Romanesque churches. The nave was initially built in the Gothic style around 1450. The tower was only added in 1778-1780 and has a Dutch Renaissance style dome. The church tower is depicted in the city's coat of arms. In 1817 four clock faces were added to the tower, on the south side as a sundial. Three bells hang in the tower. Significant renovations took place in the years 1860, 1886 and 1898/90. In 1899 a sacristy was added to the north aisle. In 1942/43 the choir was extended by 14 meters and a chapel was added to the north aisle. Today the cathedral is 56 meters long and 22 meters wide.
