The pilgrimage monument “Beginning and End” by Karl Imfeld with its three columns is a double limestone sculpture. It was installed on the occasion of EXPO 2000 in Hanover and connects Loccum with the monastery in Volkenroda. The second half of the pilgrimage monument with four columns is in Volkenroda, together they form a ring.

The Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route is a great, varied route. We hiked the trail in 2014.

The sculpture itself was created for EXPO 2000. The work of art "beginning and end" can now be taken literally, because this is where the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route begins and ends, as does its side route Loccum-Mariensee. The sculpture now has a far greater symbolic effect.
