The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, fortress and palace with solid walls, encloses in its interior a large part of the architectural evolution of Córdoba.

The Alcázar of the Christian Kings, a fortress and palace with solid walls, contains within its interior a large part of the architectural evolution of Córdoba. Roman and Visigoth remains coexist with those of Arab origin in this majestic site, since it was a favorite place of the different rulers of the city. When Córdoba was conquered by Ferdinand III the Saint in 1236, the building, which was part of the old Caliphate Palace, was completely devastated. Alfonso X the Wise begins its restoration, completed during the reign of Alfonso XI. Throughout History it has been given multiple uses, as the Seat of the Holy Office (Inquisition), or a prison (in the first half of the 19th century).

The Palace of the Christian Kings, derives from the Arabic word Al-Qasr, meaning palace.

The palace was built by the Catholic Monarchs as a residence and also serves as a fortress.

One of the symbols of Cordoba is the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Built in the 8th century as a residence for the Caliph of Córdoba, the Alcázar gained importance especially in the Middle Ages because the Catholic kings Ferdinand and Isabella lived here for eight years. The Alcázar is a mixture of an imposing fortress and a sovereign palace.

A well-preserved monument of Andalusian history that is well worth seeing.

The building itself is ok, but nothing special. The gardens, on the other hand, are wonderful.

An impressive complex, which mainly gains through the watercourses, fountains and basins and creates a contrast to the fortifications.

Palace of the Christian Kings - Alfonso XI. had the palace built. The occasion was the end of the five centuries of Arab rule by King Ferdinand in 1236.

                              ATTENTION ⚠️!!
The palace has been undergoing renovations since July 2025 and is currently closed to the public. Already paid online tickets will apparently be automatically refunded.
There's nothing about this on the website.
So, despite having a ticket, we found ourselves in front of a locked door, and upon request, we received the above information. We haven't been told how long the renovations will last.
The associated gardens are also only partially or partially open to visitors, but at least they are free for now.

Perhaps someone can update this message when tours resume 😉
