A church in Buer was mentioned as early as 1019. A predecessor building to today's church was built around 1200, which was expanded or rebuilt several times over the centuries, and in some cases was rebuilt. After this previous church was demolished, St. Urbanus was built from 1890-93. After severe damage in the Second World War, the church was rebuilt in a simplified form between 1946 and 1949. The earlier spire was omitted, which gives the church its characteristic appearance today.
