Saint Matthias is one of the twelve apostles from the closest circle of Jesus' disciples, but was not - like the rest - called into this office by himself. After the delivery of Jesus by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed for the Holy Spirit and elected a new twelfth apostle. The lot fell on Matthias, as reported in the "Acts of the Apostles" of the New Testament (Acts 1, 15-26). His feast day is on May 14th, in the German-speaking area on February 24th. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier, which is the only grave of the Apostles north of the Alps, and a number of St. Matthias Brotherhoods (SMB) regularly make pilgrimages there; what this Matthias stele - between Schwerfen, Floisdorf and Eicks - reminds of.

Great all-round view, part of the Way of St. James.
