A walk over the dike in front of the Rhine meadows takes you along a habitat with diverse flora and fauna and offers you a wonderful, wide view the whole time.

"... The Altrhein Reeser Eyland nature reserve is located right outside the gates of Rees and extends over a length of a good 4 km. It was designated in 1992 and has a size of around 44 hectares. If you look closely and with a little patience and luck, nature lovers will discover a habitat full of botanical and zoological treasures.

The directly adjacent areas are mainly used as grassland and are now almost exclusively farmed extensively thanks to the efforts of the Nature Conservation Center in the Kleve District. Rare meadow birds such as the skylark and meadow pipit live here. In a few places, small willow bushes or groves grow, as do some pollard willows and poplars, which are typical of the floodplain. Water lilies are common in the Altrhein. The rare floating-leaf plant, the water lily, can be found occasionally. A botanical peculiarity is the rare swan flower, which has unusually large populations in the Reeser Altrhein.

A number of endangered bird species can also be observed on the Reeser Altrhein: The black tern, which is threatened with extinction in North Rhine-Westphalia, is breeding here for the first time since 2012. Floating nesting aids are put out for the black tern in spring and are well received. The quail, which is also highly endangered in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the shoveler, garganey and lapwing breed here. The water is also a wintering habitat for numerous other water bird species, including whooper swans, Bewick's swans, goosander and smew. Arctic geese also flock here in winter.

The oxbow complex is also home to rare fish species. In addition to the whitefish typical of this water region, bream and silver bream, you can also find the rare species asp and bitterling. Five rare and endangered mussel species (including the inflated river mussel) and three endangered dragonfly species (including the small damselfly) can also be found in this area. In addition, five different species of bat, including the broad-winged bat and the Nathusius's bat, can be observed hunting insects at dusk. ..."
