Around 1820, the house belonged to the Reiber family, seed merchants. Andreas Reiber undertook 28 trips to America. During one of his last stays,
he was reportedly attacked and seriously injured. The chief's son, Wawonda, took care of the wounded man and nursed him back to health. Andreas
Reiber died in Pittsburgh (USA) in 1881. In 1901, Georg Martin Stumpp,
who owned a flower shop in New York, acquired the property for his parents,
had it renovated, and named it “Wawonda”.
