The Petrihaus stands on the edge of the Rödelheimer Brentanoparks, directly on the Nidda. It was originally built as a half-timbered house. The house belonged first to Rödelheim baker Johannes Petri, in 1819 bought it the merchant and banker Georg Brentano, the brother of the Romantics Clemens Brentano and Bettine von Arnim; The new owner had the house rebuilt in the style of a romantic Swiss cottage. After the death of Georg Brentano in 1851, the house found a changeable use and deteriorated visibly. It decayed and in the 1980s threatened demolition. Public protest and the founding of the Förderverein Petrihaus prevented this; the Petrihaus was extensively restored and today houses the Brentanomuseum (open from February to November in each case on the last Sunday of the month) in rooms formerly used by Georg Brentano.
Right next to the Petrihaus stands on the banks of the Nidda one of the oldest ginkgo trees in Germany, which is said to have been planted around 1750.
