The Grill'sche altar is idyllically situated in the middle of the Niedwald. With a length of around 600m and a water surface of 29,000m2, it is the largest arm of the Nidda. Together with its western, smaller neighbor called "Waldspitze", the Grill'sche old arm was created in the 1920s when the Nidda river was straightened. Due to its location, it favors a species-rich flora and fauna in the Niedwald: With a bit of luck, the patient observer will discover a kingfisher, beaver rats or the red-eared slider turtle.
