Best Hikes to St. Mary's Church, Königsberg in Bayern

Tips

  • At the marketplace stands the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary. Together with the neighboring town hall, it forms the municipal, ecclesiastical and urban development center of the city of Königsberg. The three-aisled hall church is one of the most impressive hall churches in Franconia and houses the imprint of the Last Supper relief from the Dresden Kreuzkirche of the sculptor Heinrich Epler, born in Königsberg. The late gothic style church was restored to its original appearance in the early 20th century under the direction of Coburg architect Leopold Oelenheinz, after being destroyed in the city fire in 1640. The externally imposing church, is worth seeing inside and well worth the visit.

  • The town hall and the town church stand next to each other. At the end of the 14th century, the residents wanted to build a cathedral on the mighty foundations of a secular building, the first castle in Königsberg. In fact, it became one of the most impressive Gothic parish churches in Franconia. Its tower rises 46 meters into the sky and it seems as if the masters of the Strasbourg building workshop had given the church tower a slightly French style accent.
The construction of the church began in 1397. A long construction period followed. For example, the tower was only completed four years after the consecration in 1432.
St. Mary's Church has been Evangelical Lutheran since 1523.
Many details were lost in a fire in 1640. The only former figure you can see on the buttresses on the eastern side of the choir is a Madonna. However, it is only a replica of the valuable original from around 1420, which is kept in the Veste Coburg.

  • Winding lanes, pretty half-timbered houses and in the middle of the late Gothic St. Mary's Church, built from 1397 to 1432. After the destruction by fire in 1640 - initially rebuilt as a wooden construction in Baroque style - she got back to its original appearance in the early 20th century. For over 15 years is being collected for a new organ. The current donation account balance amounts to 194,080.85 € (conditions: June 2017). About 400.000 € are needed.
