The headwaters of the Urft are west of Schmidtheim in an extensive forest area. A dense network of small streams runs through the forest and comes together in the Urftweiher. The source of the Urft in the Dahlem Forest is not freely accessible. Following the Urftweiher, the stream is visible as a river for the first time.
The Urft continues to flow through Schmidtheim, Nettersheim, Kall and Gemünd. In Schleiden-Gemünd, the Urft receives its largest tributary, the Olef. In the vicinity of Rurberg, the Urft unites with the Rur in the Rurtalsperre dammed up there.
