The Beethoven monument on Münsterplatz was unveiled on 12 August 1845 in memory of Beethoven's 75th birthday and on the occasion of the first Beethovenfest. The celebrations were preceded by a year-long commitment of the citizens of Bonn as well as in particular by Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

The design of a monument to Ludwig van Beethoven took over the then already successful in Dresden and Munich sculptor and professor at the Dresden Academy of Arts Ernst Julius Hähnel (* 1811, † 1891). His concept was considered modern and at the same time exalted.
The statue was executed by the sculptor and Erzgießer Jacob Daniel Burgschmiet (* 1796, † 1858).
