The Waaiboei (wind buoy), an eight meter high work of art in the form of a sea buoy, has stood on the dike next to the lock since 1996. With its steeple it is reminiscent of the village churches that went under in the Dollart. The Waaiboei has a spherical underside and stands loosely in a bowl. The wind tilts the buoy in the direction in which it blows.

Martin Borchert's artwork is a striking appearance from afar: Waaiboei, an impressive eight-meter-high creation, stands on top of the dike at Nieuw Statenzijl. This work of art was created in 1996 and stands free on the dike, where it moves elegantly with the forces of the wind. Thanks to the weighty bottom, weighted with concrete, the work of art dances back and forth, but remains firmly anchored in place.
