The Frankenwarte on the Nikolausberg was built in the years 1893/94 by the Würzburg Beautification Association, made possible by numerous donations from the Würzburg citizens. Until the 2nd World War it was used gastronomically and expanded several times. After the end of the war, the building was confiscated by the Americans and was not open to the public again until 1955. Today it houses the Frankenwarte Academy in addition to the observation tower.

The tower can usually be climbed for € 1. The view is great, but as of 06/2020 access is blocked due to Corona.

And the tower is beautifully playful, like an old knight's castle

Nice castle with lots of hiking and walking opportunities. Also suitable for families, as the paths are easy and there is even a large playground with a sunbathing area nearby :)

The Frankenwarte is a site on the Nikolausberg, southwest of downtown Würzburg (height 359 m above sea level), which includes a 61 hectare park that was created around 1900. There are several transmission systems, an observation tower (built in 1894) and the Frankenwarte Academy.

    History of the Frankenwarte Academy

We have been working on behalf of social democracy since 1965. A chronology from 55 years.

March 19, 1965 The founding meeting of the Society for Political Education takes place in the Frankenwarte building. Politically committed citizens from Würzburg found them to “impart knowledge and education in the sense of the democratic-social constitutional state by organizing courses, seminars, public lectures and discussions as well as by publishing suitable literature”. The aim is to set up a so-called folk high school to hold seminars and to open an information and study center on German politics. These institutions are explicitly not supposed to be party schools of the SPD, but rather an educational forum for interested citizens.
