In 1470 it was built as a round tower made of bricks with a wall base made of basalt stones from Aspel Castle, 3 km away.
The mill tower fulfilled three tasks: It housed a Loh mill that produced tannins. It was used for defense and could be armored with small wall guns. When the Rhine was in heavy ice, it stood as a bulwark against the ice pressure.

Very nice highlight from Rees, great view directly on the Rhine and the shipping traffic.
