On 3 October 1944, the southern sea dike was destroyed by British bombs.
Due to the flooding, the German occupation forces were made incapacitated and unable to act.
The village was almost completely destroyed by this action and 176 inhabitants lost their lives.
On 1 November 1944, the Allied troops landed south and north of the dike breakthrough.
One of these landing craft is today a monument to the liberation of the Netherlands on the dike ...

Atop the dyke, the tank in on the westernmost spot in the Zeeland peninsula, with a good view of Westkapelle on one side, and the beach and coastline on the other. It rests next to the Polderhuis War Museum.
