In the Middle Ages, the "Breisiger Ländchen" was donated to the monastery of the Essen Abbess Mathilde, until the French revolutionary troops marched in in 1794. In 1877 a beautification association was founded with the aim of presenting Breisig as a climatic health resort. It was only with the drilling of the thermal spring that the foundation stone for a tourist resort and spa and medicinal bath could be laid.
