The flood in February 1946, the worst flood to date that had affected all of Hanover around the Leine, had various causes: In the Harz there was heavy snowmelt and the soil was still frozen, the British had cut down large areas of forest, which otherwise would have been the water would have held, it had rained a lot and the rubble from the war prevented in many places that the much water could drain away quickly.
