The path, constructed of sandstone blocks, is colloquially known as the towpath or towpath. However, it is actually a hydraulic engineering structure built to canalize the Elbe River. At the time of its construction, steamships were already navigating the Elbe. In Saxony, towing the ships—or "towpath"—was done by hand.
