Over the centuries, the Scheldt had created a wide meander between Appels and Berlare. In order to increase the navigability of the Scheldt, it was decided to straighten the Scheldt by cutting through the meander. This happened in 1882 and 1883. The remaining meander is the Oude Schelde. In the past, there were quays here with, among other things, eel pits. The quays

were of great economic importance to Appels and Oudegem. There was a road from Oudegem-kerk to Appelsveer. However, the meander silted up and the quays had to be abandoned. Since 2002, it has been possible to walk through the silted-up area of the Oude Schelde, which is a domain forest, planted with native tree species.

In a distant past you would not be here but in the middle of the "Old Scheldt". Oude Scheldt Apples arose because the Scheldt was straightened there in the 19th century. Until then it meandered in several places between Ghent and Dendermonde. Afterwards, not only did the Scheldt meander disappear, but the moist lakes of Berlare came to lie in Appels. These moist lakes were used as grassland in the summer and as a catchment basin for the excess water in the winter. The open water is still partly present, but in most places the land has taken over the water.
