At this point the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, which was once approximately 550 km long, crossed the Kinzig Valley. From the early 2nd to the 3rd century. The Limes formed the outer border of the Roman Empire to the Germanic tribal areas in the east. Depending on the expansion phase, it was designed with watchtowers, palisades or earthen walls and ditches and, in addition to defending against smaller attacks, was primarily used to control the movement of people and goods. As the largest archaeological monument in Europe, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
