The Calafuria tower is an ancient watchtower located south of the outskirts of Livorno, along the coastal road "Aurelia" (the former State Road # 1).
Its construction dates back to the 16th century with the aim of protecting the coast from raids by Barbary pirates; later, when its purely defensive functions ceased, it was used to control the coast in order to counter smuggling. For this reason it was also restored at the beginning of the twentieth century with the reconstruction of the roof and the perimeter gallery at the top,
The building has a square plan, with a body of almost 8 meters on each side supported by a large scarp wall; the access is located above this mighty base. The tower, about 20 meters high, is closed by a projecting gallery and a roof with four sloping pitches.
Restoration works are currently underway; therefore it cannot be visited.
Next to the tower of Calafuria and the bridge of the same name, there is the Calafuria Nature Reserve, a real paradise for hikers and trekkers: a large area that climbs the nearby hill, devoid of human settlements and rich in gorse, aromatic plants, scrub shrubs Mediterranean, pine trees and a fauna that lives undisturbed there.
