La Padula (which takes its name from the once marshy land) is an area on the eastern outskirts of Livorno where agriculture and urbanization coexist; in fact it includes a recent expanding inhabited center, industrial warehouses, sparsely inhabited countryside, cultivated or uncultivated land and scrubland, with roads ranging from asphalted neighborhood streets, to farm lanes, to dirt paths, up to paths with an irregular and cobbled ground, unsuitable for bikes other than mtb or gravel. The only building that stands out massively above the houses closest to the city is the "Le Sughere" prison with nearly 300 inmates (some under special surveillance). The church of St. Teresa of Calcutta was recently built. At the end of via della Padula there is also a nice small lake for sport fishing, "La Bua", with an adjoining restaurant.
