The former synagogue in Coevorden is located at Kerkstraat 36. After the restoration in 1976, the Regional Music School was housed here and from 2017 the building has been set up as a museum where "The story of Jewish life in Drenthe and surroundings is told". A house synagogue stood on this site from 1768 to 1840, and a real synagogue was built on the same site in 1840. In 1879 a completely new synagogue was built with a ritual bath room (Mikveh) and a teacher's house. A Jewish school was built across the street from the synagogue. The stone in the façade of the teacher's house commemorates the laying of the first stone on 18 Siwan 5639 (9 June 1879).
The memorial around the corner was unveiled on April 4, 1985 and made by Wouter van Rossem. The open space in the sculpture symbolizes the permanent emptiness, the open wound, caused by the murder of the Coevorden Jews in the Second World War.
