The source of the Innerste, the "Innerste-Jump", is located southeast of Clausthal-Zellerfeld near the federal highway 242 at an altitude of about 610 meters above sea level. After just a few metres, the mountain stream, which is still small, flows into the duck swamp, an old drinking water pond that once served to supply Clausthal. The innermost is then dammed numerous more times at Buntenbock. These are mostly ponds created for mining purposes.
