Water belongs to the Harz like the mountains, even if many hiking trails are unfortunately forest highways, it is against a dream in green.

The Innerste dam was built from 1963 to 1966, it dams the Innerste and serves not only to obtain drinking water, but also to protect against floods, to increase low water levels and to generate electricity.
The distinctive overflow tower is a special feature of the Innerste Dam. This huge concrete funnel prevents the water from the reservoir from overflowing over the dam. There is no other dam in the Harz Mountains with a flood protection facility constructed in this way.
If necessary, the water from the Innerste reservoir can be diverted to the neighboring Granetalsperre via an underground water tunnel. In this case, the water has to be pumped uphill about 90 meters, as the Granetalsperre is correspondingly higher.
Although the inner reservoir is used to produce drinking water, the water can also be used for sporting activities. You can swim, sail, fish, windsurf or take a rowboat on and around the lake. On the east bank there is also a campsite not far from the road.
An approximately seven kilometer long circular hiking / cycling path leads around the reservoir of the Innerste dam.

A circumnavigation on foot is possible. On the street side you can walk on the former railway line or even cycle. A detour to the Mandolinenhütte is worthwhile, if one collects stamp of the Harzer hiking needle.

Good hiking trails lead here to the Innerstetalsperre. Who goes up to the provincial control, gets a beautiful panoramic view up to the Brocken.

To the right and left of the dam you can take a bath when the weather is nice - it is allowed. As there are no rubbish bins, please bring your own rubbish with you.

Cozy campsite with the option of camping right on the shore.
Good as a starting point for hikes in the surrounding area (and for stamp hunting!)

Next to the campsite there is the Hotel and Restaurant Berghof - there is good food on the lakeside terrace or in the cozy dining room. Closed Mon-Wed in winter
