The Heinrichsbrunnen stands directly in front of the former Franciscan monastery and today's city museum and is in honor of King Heinrich I. He founded the Misnia Castle in 929 above the valleys of the Elbe, Meisa and Triebisch, from which the market settlement of Meißen was once the present city in the Elbe valley could develop. The Heinrichsbrunnen was built in 1863 in his memory.

The Heinrichsbrunnen forms the centerpiece of Heinrichsplatz. The fountain commemorates Henry I, the first German king (after the Carolingian dynasty died out in the East Frankish Kingdom). The founding of Meißen in 929 is attributed to Henry I, who established a military security post here to secure the conquered Elbe Slav territories. Meißen thus became the nucleus of present-day Saxony, after the seat of a margraviate and a bishopric was established here under Henry's successors. Over the centuries, the margraviate developed into the Duchy/Electorate, Kingdom, and finally Free State of Saxony.
