The gatehouse, also known as the middle castle gate, secured access to the castle complex in the Middle Ages. In 1580, Schulze, the corn clerk and owner of the neighboring property, also received the gatehouse from the Elector. For a long time, the buildings were owned by one person. In 1761, master modeler Christian H. Kändler, brother of the famous porcelain designer Johann Joachim Kändler, purchased the "residential building located at the castle gate."In 1828/29, the Romantic painter Ludwig Richter (painter and art teacher at the porcelain factory) lived in one of the apartments in what are now houses 13 and 14.In 1880, the "Gorthurmgebäude" (gate tower building) was occupied by the head distiller of the Royal Porcelain Factory, Julius Kohl. Other residents included the artist Oskar Zwintscher and Konrad Hentschel, the creator of the Hentschel children. The gatehouse was used for residential purposes until 1989, then renovated and converted into a museum in 1997. The Meissen City Museum exhibited Biedermeier living culture and art on two floors of the gatehouse.torhaus-meissen.de/torhaus
