The Sint-Jansruin in Diest was inaugurated in June 2020 as one of the so-called comfort spots in Flanders. These are quiet places, often in nature, where people can recover in silence from what, among other things, the corona crisis has done to them. Women's organization Ferm, the former KVLV, wants to offer comfort to people who have had to deal with grief in recent months.

The parish of Sint-Jan-de-Doper was founded in 1253 and in 1297 the church was elevated to the rank of Chapter Church. Architecturally, the building consisted of a heavy west tower behind which was a nave, consisting of three aisles and three bays. The building was constructed in local iron sandstone.
In 1578, the church was burned down by the troops of William of Orange. Only the northern part was restored. The church remained in use until 1823, after which it was used exclusively as a cemetery. In 1853, exactly six centuries after its founding, the roof above the choir collapsed.

The current appearance of the Sint-Janskerk (also called Sint-Jans de Doperkerk), built in the 13th century, is largely attributable to arson during the religious troubles of the 16th century.
After those devastation, only the choir part was restored. After all, the other churches were much more popular. Eventually the church was closed. In the Christmas season of 1823, the roof of the choir collapsed. It has been in ruins ever since.
