The figure is an enlarged replica of the equestrian figure set up in front of the Old National Gallery on Museum Island. The original was designed by Tuaillon in Rome in 1890-1895 and presented at the 1896 art exhibition. The enlarged version for the Tiergarten was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1906.
