In the lake at Monrepos Castle there is an artificially raised island.
The Hohenheim chapel was built here in 1804 under Duke Friedrich I (King of Württemberg from 1806). This Gothic style chapel was bombed in 1945 and has been in ruins ever since.
The chapel cannot be visited as a bird sanctuary has been set up here.

In 1803, the chapel was relocated to the island near Ludwigsburg and rebuilt there on an artificial rocky hill facing the lakeside palace. Due to its origins, the chapel is sometimes still referred to as the "Hohenheim Chapel," for example, on the Ludwigsburg website. The chapel, which consists of a single-story nave and a square tower leaning against it, was badly damaged by a bomb during World War II and subsequently never fully rebuilt. However, a dark, deep grotto is said to still exist below the chapel on the island.
