The octagonal, sloping square was designed by the Italian master builder Donato Giuseppe Frisoni. It helps to overcome the difference in height between the castle and the market square and, as the name suggests, served the timber trade for many years. Today there is a roundabout on it. The obelisk in the middle of the square was erected in 1953 on the site of a fountain. One of the four pages is dedicated to the four great Ludwigsburg poets:
Justin Kerner,
David Friedrich Strauss
Theodor Friedrich Vischer and
Edward Moerike.
