Legend has it that Sibold, the first abbot of the neighboring Cistercian monastery Lehnin, was killed here by Slavic fishermen around 1185/1190. The legend (see monastery) probably contains a true core, which lay in a dispute between the monks and the Nahmitzer Slavs over fishing and milling rights.

One of the many legends and myths that surround Lehnin Monastery is about its first abbot, a clergyman named Sibold or Sebaldus. He is said to have been killed with their oars by fishermen from the village of Nahmitz, who still belonged to the pagan faith. The abbot had hidden in a tree to avoid his pursuers, but his dog, who had been following him, betrayed him. Margrave Otto held strict judgment against the murderers to whom the Virgin Mary had appeared in a dream. Since then, the monks have been safe from persecution.
