The Krombeek, which runs through the 'Burreken' nature reserve, is known for the historical presence of stream-dwelling fish, including special fish species such as bullhead and brook lamprey.
However, during a fisheries survey in 2007, no more fish were caught on the upper reaches of the Krombeek, despite the presence of a suitable stream habitat. An important reason was the presence of several obstacles that were difficult or impossible for fish to overcome. With the construction – in 2008 – of three fish ladders and the breaking out of the piped sections of the stream, the main obstacles were removed, allowing fish to re-colonize the upper reaches of the Krombeek.
