The Klosterfelde peat pit is a lowland moor that was formed during the last ice age. Today it is an idyllic nature reserve. The moor lake was only created after peat mining ended in 1990.

The Torfstich Klosterfelde nature reserve protects various habitats, of which a silting moor that was created after the last ice age is particularly noteworthy. Moors develop in water-rich habitats due to a lack of oxygen. Dead plant material can hardly be broken down under these conditions and is deposited as peat. A moor only grows a few millimeters per year. The multi-year peat extraction left its mark in the Torfstich Klosterfelde in the 1980s. Despite this destructive intervention, the moor still has great ecological value. It is surrounded by large sedge marshes, reed beds, willow-buckthorn communities and alder and birch swamp forests that are typical for the site. The surrounding wet meadows have not been used at all or only extensively in recent decades. The area also includes other endangered biotope types such as
sandy dry grassland or inland dunes. Last but not least, the area also needs to be protected due to the large number of protected animal and plant species. For example, the highly endangered plant species broad-leaved orchid and stiff-leaved orchid, the carnation or meadow knotweed grow here. Endangered animal species include the great crested newt, sand lizard, lesser spotted eagle, black and white stork and the brown hare.

Well hidden and much bigger than the name says.
