The Finow Canal is one of the oldest artificial waterways in Germany. It connects the Havel with the Oder. There are 12 historical locks on it. The westernmost is the Ruhlsdorf lock, the easternmost is the Liepe lock. There is an information board at every lock and other historical industrial ruins (unfortunately some are smeared with paint).

The canal is only available for recreational, sport and passenger shipping.

The Oder-Havel-Radweg, the former towpath, runs along the Finow Canal. It is popular with both cyclists and pedestrians.

The section recommended here leads from the Ruhlsdorf-Zerpenschleuse train station to Marienwerder. I hiked the route to the Kupferhammer lock in September 2015 and left out 2 locks between Marienwerder and Finow in December 2016. However, I can recommend the entire route, at least as far as the Kupferhammer lock.

Here on the section between Leesenbrücker- and Ruhlsdorfer Schleuse you walk on a wonderful old towpath directly along the Finow Canal.
