Records from Martha von Arnim (née von Schlegell) show that the area and its trees had been protected for centuries. Old maps from 1870 show that there was an animal enclosure near Voigtsgrün. It belonged to Alexander von Arnim, who kept red deer here. The hunting lodge, today's log cabin, was built around 1890. In 1909, his brother, Arno von Arnim, inherited Voigtsgrün and thus also the animal enclosure. The foundation stone for today's zoo was laid in 1956. The initially 6-hectare site has trees that are up to 450 years old. Today, the zoo administration is located in the log cabin, which is a "listed monument".
