Schönfels came into being around 1200 in the course of the high level of colonization for the development of new settlement areas under Emperor Friedrich I. The dominion of the same name formed in the border area of what later became the Pleissenland and Vogtland territories directly under the Empire.

The castle served as the administrative center of the Rode Lordship. Presumably originally created in connection with the Pleissenland, Schönfels came under Vögtische rule in the 13th century.

The pressure from stronger neighbors, the influence of the emperor and multiple divisions increasingly weakened the bailiffs. Parts of their possessions came under Wettin and Bohemian feudal dependency. In 1349, for example, "Schonenfels castrum" appears in the feudal book of Frederick the Strict, Margrave of Meissen, entrusted to Heinrich II Reuss von Plauen.

Although the bailiffs of Plauen secured the lordship of Schönfels after the Ronneburg line had died out in 1368 with a deed from the emperor, the castle and lordship finally became part of the Wettin dominions in 1398. As a result, the House of Wettin appointed a “calculating bailiff” and integrated Schönfels into what later became the Zwickau office.

Subsequently, the noble families used as landlords in the Schönfels lordship changed several times. The von Weißenbach family, who lived at the castle from 1459 to 1586, largely shaped the current appearance of Schönfels Castle with their renovations around 1500.

Schönfels Castle is a typical hilltop castle and was built on a diabase rock spur in the 12th century and was later redesigned.
