The sporty and fit fellow human being can normally combine a walk in the Valley of the Zwarte Beek that starts in Zelem quite well with a trip in the walking area Venusberg, also worth it in terms of history, nature formation and beautiful walking paths in neighboring Meldert (east of Zelem), also in the Zwarte Beek nature reserve: natuurpunt.be/natuurgebied/vallei-van-de-zwarte-beek-lummen-venusberg-schurfert

The beautiful panorama from the Venusberg has been voted one of the most beautiful spots in the Lage Kempen. The walking areas of Zelem and Meldert are connected by a road that you can find on the map of the area at the starting point in Zelem.

The number of walks that start here in the beautiful center of Zelem is already impressive, but if you also do the puzzling yourself, the possibilities are almost endless. Zelem is really one of those villages from which you can visit a range of nature reserves and landscapes. Exploring the village in itself is worth it. Forest, heath, heritage or valley: Zelem has it all, with connections to many other beautiful areas in Hageland and Limburg. And all from the Zwarte Beek Valley.

The Zwarte Beek Valley is the ideal place to walk in the region around Lummen, Beringen, Halen and Hechtel-Eksel. This nature reserve offers more than 1500 hectares of beautiful nature where you can get lost for hours.

In Halen, the Zwarte Beek first flows through an open valley area where all kinds of meadow birds such as curlew, lapwing or snipe like to stay. An abandoned fish pond has been transformed into an open water feature and an original viewing hut gives you the chance to view the birds present up close undisturbed. The witness hills are very close together here. They are the remains of former sandbanks, when the sea came here. The stream has to fold and twist to guide its water past the hills of the Hees, Gennep and an extension of the Kolenberg. In some places, the valley is only a few hundred meters wide. In winter, the marshes and meadows often flood.
