The earliest documented mention of the village dates back to December 7, 1230.[1] In the 16th century, the village was temporarily abandoned, meaning it was desolate. The inhabitants moved to Rieth. In 1720, the people rebuilt their village on the Selbach stream, some distance from the former site. Since then, the houses and buildings have been carefully maintained and are now listed as historical monuments. In 1899, a hunter killed the last wolf in Thuringia in the village's fields. Today, 125 people live in the village. The parish shares a parish with the neighboring village of Rieth.
