The settlement of the place Römershagen goes back to the 11th century. Even in the 18th century, the settlement structure of Römershagen was only seven houses and could therefore hardly have been decisive for the comparatively huge church building. The oldest church is attested for 1550. It is probably a half-timbered chapel attached to the remaining tower of a ruined fortification. The tower is an old defensive tower that is significantly older than the church itself. Between 1715 and 1717, most of the current church was added to the east side of the tower. The walls were partly built on the existing foundations of today's church. On December 5th, 1717, the church was given (blessed) by the Wenden pastor Petrus Arnoldi.
